My
favorite chair is the rocker that belonged to my Great-Grandparents,
Lura and Romulus Saunders. They acquired it sometime prior to my
grandmother's birth in 1882. The rocker was in their home in Willow
Springs, North Carolina until my great-grandmother's death in 1933,
at which time my grandmother, Novella Saunders Rogers took it to
her home. When my grandparents moved to Florida in 1937, the chair
was part of the furniture they brought with them. I lived in the
farmhouse in Live oak with my grandparents, parents, siblings, and
aunt until I was eleven, and the chair was part of our living room
furniture. Our family moved to Georgia, my grandparents died, and
the farmhouse was sold. The chair remained with my aunt, Hazel Collins,
in Live Oak, until the mid-eighties when she offered it to me. I
was delighted. The chair is covered in a flocked, pea green fabric
that my father and aunt believe to be the original upholstery. It
remains the most comfortable rocker we own, and I love to curl up
in it with my flannel gown and a good book.
